Understood, however, I often still prefer to use ssh behind a firewall.

Hi,
You probably want 'shutdown -r now' for reboot or 'shutdown -h now'
for power down (halt). You also might find 'apropos <keyword>' useful
to scan through man pages on the system to find if anything matches a
<keyword> of interest to you (in case you don't know the command name
for the function you want.)
In this case, I get (just sharing with you so you know more for the future):
freedman@warthog:~$ apropos shutdown
shutdown (2) - shut down part of a full-duplex connection
shutdown (8) - bring the system down
