You may want to try newer packages. In slink, there is gnome 0.3, but
there is gnome 1.0 available. Make sure you install gnome-panel.
Add the folowing line to /etc/apt/sources.list and use apt as the
access method in dselect:
deb http://www.debian.org/~jim/debian-gtk-gnome/gnome-stage-slink unstable main

Create a file .xsession in your homedirectory.
I use
xterm -ls -geometry 80x24+0+63 &
xterm -ls -geometry 80x24+515+63 &
/usr/bin/X11/fvwm2 &
/usr/bin/panel
Alternatively, you could just use the line
gnome-session
