missing characters in latex

This don't work:
\documentstyle [isolatin1]{article}
\begin{document}
\section{Barf}
Foo bar baz!
ae = f
oe = x
aa = e
AE = F
OE = X
AA = E
\end{document}

IOW: oslah, aring and ae doesn't work, and I'm getting VERY frustrated...

I do a 
  setfont /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts/lat1-16.psf
and 
  mapscrn /usr/lib/kbd/consoletrans/trivial
in /etc/rc.boot/console
and
echo -ne '\033(K'
in /etc/profile

The .tex file is ok, but the .dvi is minus the Norwegian characters.

WHAT?
