also geht das mit ghostscript. Womöglich aber eher schlecht als recht. 
Ich würde gs 8.50 empfehlen (APFL)

was sagt denn file $DATEI ?

Neuere Illustrator Versionen speichern pdf. Vielleicht kannst Du die 
datei so in scribus importieren (als ps-eps importieren wird intern, 
afair so weit möglich in svg konvertiert 1.2.1 vom Januar SID).

Erste Wahl könnte Tobias Hilbrichts Vorschlag sein skencil zu verwenden.

Es gab mal Corel Draw! für Linux (v9). Sodipodi fällt mir da noch ein, 
sollte sich aber ähnlich wie inkscape verhalten. Cenon kann vielleicht 
damit umgehen, ist aber afair nicht opensource. 

Illustrator kann übrigens svg und editierbares eps exportieren, 
vielleicht wäre das der beste Ansatz.
