Not that I consider myself a guru, but... the problem of dpkg-registering files at runtime is a longstanding one. This is not possible currently, AFAIK. Also, the idea of shipping dummy files in the .deb looks bad to me: when you overwrite them with the real files, tools such as debsums will detect something fishy. -- Florent
