When I hit 'x', the buttons reappear. There's no library problem with it... I guess upstream must have changed the defaults? Perhaps this bug can be closed, then. But you might want to change the defaults, if at all possible, since I'm sure a lot of novice xdvi users (like me!) would be confused by this, since the previous behaviour of xdvi was to start with the buttons enabled.
