I've tried the r300 driver (installing from CVS as per the README files) and it has failed to work reliably for me. This is on a Dual Athlon MP SMP machine with a Radeon 9550. Best case the display locks up. Worst case the display goes out completely until a reboot. I did not get the OpenGL to work at all, though the r300 site says it does work somewhat. The Mesa CVS does not seem to be the same Mesa that's in the Xorg CVS tree AFAICT.
