Just for the record, maybe somebody else runs into the same problem...

*) get the latest pmon version[1,2] and copy it on the usb stick
*) in pmon: load -r -f bfc00000 /dev/fs/ext2@usb0/pmon-LM60xx-1.3.6a.bin

after that the debian installer boots fine. for the moment it hangs at
the "start partitioner" step, which is AFAIK an installer bug if you try
to install from usb sticks because the same problem hit me on my amd64
lenovo laptop, but that is a different story.
