she is using it enough that a few days of downtime are actually a
problem for her...

probably. i'll forward that suggestion.
if it is the ram, then, well, i have been wanting to do a ram upgrade
anyways...

the machine is running as a proxy and outgoing smtp server.
it should be able to run unattended 24/7 for some years. 
so i prefer something with little or no need for active cooling
(which the qube1 has done so far for the most part)
