ok, a few do come to mind. But not overly much, really.

Thanks for reviewing.  It would be really great if somebody more
educated than me could assemble a list of packages we should at
least put on our todo list andwhat we do not need (because for instance
it is contained in Emboss).  I'd volunteer to complete our list
of preliminary packages - but I'm just lacking knowledge about
a certain amount of these programs.

Huh?  IMHO e1000 is one of the best supported cards - did you asked
on debian-user (or debian-user-de).  I can not imagine that this
should be a real problem ...
Would be interesting for debian-boot as well!
