It seems that /etc/init.d/mountvirtfs and this thread 
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/12/msg01149.html might provide 
some answers. /sysfs is already mounted regardless of fstab.

Now I can get on and compile and install IPW2200 :-)
