if that is true, i wonder if sysklogd and sysvinit have bugs or are special
cases...

the following line appears in the makefile for tpctl:

  mknod --mode=664 /dev/thinkpad c 10 170

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt does not have an entry for
this.  i don't think MAKEDEV has one either.

does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?  contact the makedev
maintainer?
