This is one of those en_GB/en_US things.  I use double space myself
(just then, for instance), and I've seen some ridiculously vicious
arguments between people who have been trained in the two competing
styles, but it's pretty much academic for control files: whitespace
within folded fields defaults to being non-significant, so double
spaces get squeezed as soon as the text gets HTMLised or whatever.
