Re: [debian-knoppix] Multiple hardware issues



OK, I gave up getting the onboard sound working when booting from the CDROM.

I disabled it in the BIOS and plugged in a Crystal chipset audio card. This now
works fine with Knoppix CD.

I did an modprobe cs46xx
which finally got it working on the hard disk boot.

How does one run the hardware probing scripts from Knoppix to automatically create
the /etc/modules file with the correct stuff when changing hardware?

Interesting that it is configuring for the sound card but it still doesn't work.  xmms just hangs up.

At the bottom of this, I've attached a dmesg output from a CD boot and the second one is
from a hard disk boot using the OSS drivers. Note that it does load the solo1 driver.

On newer ISOs (see changelog on servers) a new cheatcode called alsa was 
introduced. This does activate the alsa-soundsystem, which supports some 
newer chipsets (including many of the ac97-ones).

So you could try to use the "knoppix alsa" cheatcode at boot-prompt from CD.

This occurs when booting from the KNOPPIX CD.  When attemping to use
sound such as playing the ogg file on the CD, xmms reports that the
sound card is not configured.

2nd issue - while there appear to be various hardware isssues. I need to
ask the dumb question - how to major and
minor device numbers get assigned in Linux. Back in my days working on
Microport UNIX (SVR4), we set the major
number up explicitly in the kernel and the minor numbers were assigned
via the driver itself. Now, I'm trying to understand
the device /dev/dsp. If I have mulitple sound cards, how do the minor
numbers get setup? I have installed KNOPPIX
using the knx-install script and now I get Can not open device errors. I
used to get Solo1 device timeout errors but I've been swapping sound
cards in and out and now I'm not sure whats linked together.
