Your solution worked perfectly (I needed both mousedev and usbmouse in the modules file).

No fussing with exiting and restarting X were necessary..

It may be sufficient to state the modules in /etc/modules, so they will
be loaded automatically on system boot.

After pluging in the mouse and manually loading the modules, it may not
even be necessary to restart X, if you just switch to the Text consol;e
with control-Alt-F1 and back to X with Alt-F5 (or F7 in the harddisk
installation).

The fact that the mouse driver is not automatically loaded when you plug
in the device may be caused by a yet missing entry in the USB config
files, or wrong detection as keyboard-only device. May go away with the
next kernel/usb-utils release.
