I'm not sure if this is the way to do it but:

modprobe -r hfsplus
FATAL: Module hfsplus not found.

Looking through the menu I couldn't see how to load the hfsplus module.
Furthermore, both partman and mac-fdisk show the apple partition  as
being plain hfs.  Is this because it's OS8.6?
