Drat, I misunderstood.  Of course you meant the incoming smtp connection.

As someone else said, postfix does not close the incoming smtp connection
until either the message is either queued, or delivered.  It tries it best
to wait for the message to be delivered, but it will queue it instead (and
close the incoming SMTP connection) if it is out of resources to attempt an
immediate delivery, though.
