It can, but it doesn't need to.  And if your (external) MDA uses *SMTP*,
then drop it.  Any external MDA worth its bits will use LMTP instead, so
that you have per-recipient delivery control.

Postfix (the newest one, anyway) has connection caching for SMTP.  The old
one can do so for LMTP already, as long as you don't tell it to switch
the LMTP client it is talking to without also changing the transport name.
