The filter that decides what multicast packets to pass to the higher
layers is present in the drivers, and controlled elsewhere.

IIRC the FA311 is based on a National Semiconductor controller, correct?
If so, then it's the card that I'm thinking of and one of the ones on
which I experienced problems.  These problems have been fixed in recent
2.4 kernels, though.  Which kernel are you running?  Are you on x86?
