Information, not hints (was: Re: [D-I] Hints for timezone names translations in D-I

It's not just underscores. I've reviewed every translation of tzsetup
now, and most of them are wrong. You are supposed to translate "south
pole" as "polo Sul" or whatever. Not as Antárctida/Pólo_Sul.
The text is displayed to the user as a list of timezones in their
country, from which they choose their timezone. That's all it
should be.
The comments tell you to translate the English text and they give the
English text. You are not supposed to translate the internal libc
timezone
value that appears in the msgid.
At the moment things are so broken that most of the translations
will be
completly unsable.
We seem to be getting information now, that we needed to start with.
Are you now saying that if the msgid lists the continent or country,
we are not supposed to include that? (I thought the convention here
for that was the pipe symbol, not the forward slash.) Unless that
information is still retained in some way, the users are not going to
know where the timezones are.
First I translated them like this:
msgid "Antarctica/South_Pole"
msgstr "Châu_Năm_Cực/Nam_Cực_(optional extra information about
the locality)
because, in my experience, if the msgid has underscores, that usually
means the translation should, as well.
Then, after finding out that the underscores weren't correct, I re-
edited the file like this:
msgid "Antarctica/South_Pole"
msgstr "Châu Năm Cực/Nam Cực (optional extra information about
the locality)
is this still wrong??
In some cases, where the country was a subset of the continent, I did
it like this:
msgid "America/Sao_Paulo"
msgstr "Châu Mỹ/Bra-xin/Sao Paulo"
since otherwise most of my users wouldn't have a clue where Sao Paulo
was.
And I don't know if that's right or not.
Could you please give us some examples, next time? We had quite a bit
of information _about_ the localities, but very little on how to
format our translations. Coming up to what is evidently going to be
my _third_ try at those translations, I'd like to make sure I'm doing
it correctly.
