In my experience, it keeps API/ABI compatibility (I apt-got source,
applied the patch, rebuilt the debs and everything worked happily).
I'm not quite sure how all the icon loading, nautilus integration, etc.
work; it's quite possible they break without GNOME. It would need
testing.
(But really, as everyone says, it's ridiculous to have a Documents
button in GTK when you don't have GNOME.)
