So, you start gnomecc and see nothing in the right hand pane despite clicking on the tree in the left hand pane? You should get results irrespective of how much RAM you have. If you're running low on memory, Linux will swap a lot but it should still perform the same actions eventually. I suggest you write up your problem to submit@bugs.debian.org, (yes it'll get back to me anyway :}) and show me any errors messages being output, if any.
