One more thing I noticed while reviewing the changes in git.
You should not modify the .gitignore file included in the upstream source.
The clean target in debian/rules takes care of removing the generated
files, these should not be included in the .gitignore file.
You should only modify the upstream source with quilt patches in the
debian directory. To have have a package specific gitignore files you
should use debian/.gitignore instead.
