I believe the idea is that the C one is stable, and C++ programs
can still link in to that one. IIRC the exact same migration
away from GDAL's C++ API happened a year or three ago, and
aside from the time it took to convince people to change. it
really wasn't a big deal and didn't require massive rewrites.
