I have experienced a bind9 backported to woody that hung (didn't die,
but stopped working, and failed to reload so should be stopped and
started to come back to life again).

I am pretty sure no log message showed, as I ran logcheck on that
machine (also backported from more recent version) and believe I
remember the logcheck mantainer refusing to add rules to suppress bind
reload messages.

So my suggestion is to setup cron to do a "invoke-rc.d bind9 reload"
from time to time. That shouldn't hurt, but complains if failing.
