While this can be a problem when sending issues upstream, I don’t think
this will be so much the case within Debian, where the differences
between the VCS and the released package should remain small.

I agree this is a barrier to becoming a co-maintainer, but I don’t think
it should be considered as a barrier when it comes to triaging bugs or
contributing patches.
