I started using Linux (and Debian) a couple months after Woody "came
out." Was woody due "any day now" for a year like this?

For what it's worth Microsoft goes into feature freeze about a year
before an OS ships. They fork the kernel then. About the only thing
that changes after that is the icons and desktop colors.
