What if this patch is merged into the Debian kernel's patch tree? The
driver is free, it is useful, and including it in the kernel doesn't
create a need to move it to contrib.

Yes, this is an artificial means to move the driver from contrib to
main. But this is how it should be done: it makes the life easier for
users, and it doesn't compromise the social contract.
