I have worked for several commercial organizations where the level of
hostility and lack of communication equaled or surpassed that in Debian.
At one of them one of the directors murdered another during a meeting.

I can't be the only one intrigued by this - any more details :)
However, I was being _paid_ for that work (nonetheless, I eventually
resigned from those jobs). Here I just killfile the jerks and the
flamewars. I suspect that I am not the only member of Debian who keeps his
participation to a minimum because of the hostility.

It helps to take a long view. It also helps to see some of the good people putting in long hours for fun and profit and gleaning satisfaction which they may not get elsewhere. Everyone: every time you get the living shit flamed out of you - don't retaliate with a pointless flamewar - use your anger and energy to go fix a bug / help a newbie on debian-user / take a break. I have a dyslexic friend who rings me up and asks me to spell out commands in the phonetic alphabet- its as frustrating as hell when you spend an hour talking someone through something as simple as burning a CD-ROM but it feels good looking back
on it to be able to be putting something into the Debian experience.
from your screen.

We now return you to your regular flamewar :)
