The above two paragraphs don't make sense to me, in combination.  If
upstream can write code to convert from .desktop to their own format,
why can't they just include that directly in their software?  The user
would never have to know that the software wasn't reading .desktop
"natively" (except that presumably it wouldn't support all the .desktop
features).
