There are certain requirements you may have (e.g. need latest kernel &
toolchain or your arch isn't supported) which are always likely to
require running unstable/testing.

There is however no good reason why various new packages could not be built
in such a way as to be installable on potato systems. Just because a
particular package isn't *part* of stable doesn't mean that it isn't
desirable to have it *available* as an add-on to stable.

For example, you might want a half decent FTP server, and decide that
vsftpd is your only option. There's no reason why there shouldn't be
a package of vsftpd for potato, available from an official Debian source.

It would help *lots* of people if such things were available.

I'm not sure what the best way to achieve this would be.

That would certainly be a very good start. The problem then mostly goes
away for a short while, before gradually returning to haunt us again.

It'd be nice to have come up with an answer before that happens...
