HTML?  You need to discover LaTeX.  And LyX, for people like your mom
and sister.

LaTeX and LyX are meant for writing documents and having them typeset nicely.
HTML is not suited well for that purpose.  Neither is the "simulation
of a typewriter" that Microsoft calls a word processor.  It is hard
to tell, reading from sw.openoffice.org, whether they intend it to be 
yet another MS Word clone; even if not, it is far less mature than
LaTeX is.
