Nobody mentioned the K6 in this thread before. But I agree the 486 
machines alone are about 15% of all registered PCs. Does this make 
a big difference?

I guess more important is that -mpentium does not provide a big 
improvement, as it seems. Maybe gcc 3.0 will be better.
