Ugly, really ugly.
But if you really need such a mechanism, please create a shell
independent mechanism, which does work with bash, ksh, csh, tcsh, zsh, 
sash, sh,...

I don't think so, but if you really need it, why don't you simply add
it for your local system? /etc/profile is a conffile, so you (the
admin) are allowed to change it for your needs.
