Re: RH and GNOME

The gnome people are paid by redhat. the gnome people use redhat on thei
machines. so if they compile their software, they do it in a redhat way
with rpm, ...

they don't have a machine with debian on it, so they can't create debian/
subdirs, rules files, debian packages.

and they don't want to create package files for every single architecture and
distributions (that would be a lot of work - debian, suse, redhat, caldera,
stampede, delix, lst, powerlinux, mklinux, ppclinux * 2 (i386, alpha, for some
distributions even m68k or sparc).

nobody can expect them to spend all their live createing packages.
and it would slow down gnome development a lot.

so, what they do, is to create gnome, and build packages only for one
distribution, as an example how it's done. their choice is redhat.
but they are willing to accept any patches, that will allow to create the
packages on other distributions too, and even to help if there are problems
(ok, they can't help with dpkg internals, because they don't have dpkg).

what else can you expect fromk them ? i'm not willing to do rpm's for suse
something, because i don't have suse installed.

if you want gnome on debian, there is little work : create the debian/* files
and add them to the cvs tree.

i think it's a great idea, that redhat has hired people to work on gnome.
and gnome is open source software, released under the gpl.
it's not redhat specific - the situation is only, that they work on redhat
machines, so they can only test and modify it for redhat.

if some source has to be differnet, i'm sure they will accept patches
#ifdef DEBIAN
....
#else
#ifdef SUSE
...
#else
(redhat stuff here)
#endif	/* ifdef SUSE */
#endif  /* ifdef DEBIAN */

but someone needs to write these diffs.

just do it !
