at least you dont' need to worry about gnu software :
many programs now use automake generated makefiles.
with these all you need to say is "CC=gcc" and everything works
(or better : set this environment before running configure - it will
take care of everything).

by the way : did i say, that i like automake and recommend it to
everyone ?
