It exists in versions 1.4.0.13 and higher:

dpkg (1.4.0.13) experimental; urgency=low

  ...
  * Patch from Guy Maor <maor@ece.utexas.edu> to dpkg-source.pl to support
    pristine (MD5-equivalent) upstream sources.

You are still to required to rename the upstream source appropriately.
The upstream source must also pack into exactly one directory.  That
patch also allowed directories in the patch - creating them if they
don't exist.

Klee - is this not widely known?
