Bug#3119: emacs font handling

Further information:

I've compared (by md5sum and `dpkg -l') the libraries and Emacs on
valour (Austin's machine, where Emacs has no trouble) and they're all
the same except for libc5, where I'm one revision ahead of Austin, and
libncurses.so.3.0.  I have 1.9.9e-1 - Austin, what is installed on
valour?

Austin, if you don't mind, do you think you could try upgrading valour
to libc5-5.2.18-6?  Then try and do something with Emacs set to the
6x13 font (resize windows, start Info with C-H I, that sort of thing).

Then try the same with ncurses3.0-1.9.9e-1, but don't do them both at
once otherwise we'll not know which it is (if it's anything at all to
do with either of them!)  My money would be on the libc rather than
ncurses.
