Bug#3119: emacs font handling
(Austin, I've cc'd this to debian-bugs as the information it contains
may be relevant. Please consider whether any reply needs to go
there before you send it.)

I've had no problems with any other software - xterm happily continues
using 6x13 without segfaulting, for example. Don't know.

Strace shows that Emacs never gets as far as running either
site-start.el or .emacs before crashing (in the case when the font is
set from .Xdefaults). I may try an X session to valour when I'm
somewhere with slightly more than 14k4 to it.
Emacs dumps core so there's definitely *a* bug in Emacs or xlib; no
program should do that. I don't believe it's dodgy hardware: it's far
too easy to isolate the behaviour that exercises the bug.

I'll see if I can locate more recent versions of any of these, though
the X packages are the most recent I could find a day or so ago on the
Debian mirror at sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk.
