There seems to be no recent information about this topic. Though i
remembered that it was discussed on debian-devel two months ago. Someone
wanted to package large chunks of scientific data. [1] Probably we
should contact the ftp-masters before we introduce the game and ask them
for their opinion although i think, if we can split the data, packaging
the game should be O.K.

Me too. I had a look at [2] and the sources consist of ~440 MB data and
~230 MB optional data. That is about the same size as Red Eclipse for
example. If Vegastrike is stable and there are no other show-stoppers, i
am in favour of adding the game to the to-do list.

I also believe that we should strive for packaging high quality
graphic-rich games and even if there was a constraint of disk space,
supporting the download of free game data via game-data-packager would
be better than doing nothing at all IMO.

I think most of us will agree that high quality graphics are often
missing from free software games. But those data files are not only
suitable for games, often you can use or combine them with other
projects. We are lacking free data so packaging such games is a great
opportunity to remedy those shortcomings.
