Of course, I don't read Chinese as you may imagine. But, as the topic
raised again (which is logical because it's not completely dealt
with), I'd like to know which choice you made for "translating"
"Taiwan, Province of China" in Simplified Chinese?
Is this just the equivalent of "Taiwan", a literal translation, or
something else?
In any case, how was the decision taken? Is this a choice you made
personnally, a choice made by the Chinese translation team or
something else.
Be as careful and precise as possible in your answer because I will
use your answer (with your permission) in the discussion : if the
Simplified Chinese (which is regarded as the official language of PRC)
translators choose themselves to use just "Taiwan" this may be one of
the arguments for making an exception to the standard in the iso-codes
package.
About this issue, Alastair mentioned he works on adding an extra field
in the XML version of the iso-3166 file. This field would then be
something like "Common name". It would default to the iso-3166 short
name....but in cases where the iso-3166 name is obviously
inappropriate, this name could then be changed.
After this, we will have to get the advice of either the Debian
Technical Comittee or the Debian Installer Team about *which* field we
use in Debian Installer.
As Herbert Xu reaction in -boot shows, there is probably indeed no way
to make everyone happy : we're still in the process of trying to have
the maximum people happy. Please try to spread out this message to all
Chinese users of Debian, is possible.
