Well, this surely is only a problem for md on root.  You can have a
RAID1 on other devices, though.  Also, I thought LILO could boot from
RAID1?

Yes, it does, and with fiddling around the old Woody CDs (changed kernel, added mdadm to the root-image and basedebs) and using the shell heavily during installation, one could even install Debian on a software raid1 without having to copy around any data afterwards. I can proove it if necessary.

I hope this is at least possible manually with the new system, but I have no time at all to test before mid-june.

With the 2.6 kernel, one can even build partitions onto a raid (raid 1 over two identical ide drives, and several partitions onto that), but I am just finding out what nodes I have to mknod before I can use that.

I hope that this helps anyone, or at least stirs things up a little bit,
