I was able to get it working.  I'm not sure why "-t squeeze-backports"
did not resolve the problem, because there were several libraries and
-dev packages that needed to be upgraded to the bpo version to make the
libcairo2 upgrade successful.  A bit of fiddling in aptitude and the
upgrade was successful.
