Ok, looks like it's not pinned at all. What does:

apt-cache policy

(without package) says?

I don't have working debian atm, but when I add www.backports.org
to my sources.lists I miss (release and all other fields):

 500 http://www.backports.org etch-backports/non-free Packages
     origin www.backports.org
 500 http://www.backports.org etch-backports/contrib Packages
     origin www.backports.org

So it really does look something is not ok.
