Yes :-(

But it's not mandatory to reinstall everything.

You can try to download by hand the flash-kernel script from Squeeze
or sid (and its dependencies, if any), boot the NAS in rescue mode[1],
install flash-kernel with dpkg in a console and retry to flash the
kernel from that point.

I've done this once, but it was some months ago, so not sure any more
of every step :-/ I've always some notes from this install time, a bit
in a mess, waiting to become a howto, but perhaps already usefull (?).

[1] Redboot command to boot in rescue mode :

exec -c "console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/ram mem=256M@0xa0000000 rescue/enable=true" -r 0x01800000 

assuming you've loaded before a suitable kernel and initrd by tftp for
example.
