Well I get the message about rivefb too, but it just ignores it and goes
on.  I do set KSRC and KVERS before runing debian/rules binary-modules
though to tell it what kernel headers dir to use, or use
module-assistant which does that for you.  I think that also takes care
of setting the right CC version too.
