I don't see anything obviously amiss.

But, let's try something - add in the LOOP device to the 2.4.14 kernel.

You'll need to edit drivers/block/loop.c to remove the two instances of
calls to deactivate_page() - just delete them, they are no longer needed.

I did exactly this the other day, when I couldn't get X 4.x to run...

Also, could you post the log generated by the Xserver when it starts up,
both under 2.2.18 and 2.4.14?
