dpkg --purge xsm  # proceeds ok
pwd /etc/X11/xsm
mv system.xsm system.xsm.tmp
dpkg -i xsm_3.3.4-2.deb
then checking give the original file in /etc/X11/xsm
and a symlink to there from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xsm/system.xsm


I *think* they were the other way around in a previous release (3.3.4-1 (?))
and this may have confused dpkg.  It all looks okay now. Thanks.
