I think that this can be the issue. I would suggest not upgrading your machine to AT-SPI 2.7 or 2.8 until Orca 3.8 is uploaded to Debian. Even then, be prepared to downgrade if it still does not work. Everything will be upgraded to Gnome 3.8 eventually.
