There are always people living close and far to any destination we
choose. FWIW, a West-Canadian will have more or less the same travel
time to Taiwan than to Brazil ;-) and, depending on several issues
such as travel plans, I guess some East Europeans also would. Then,
there are cultural distances — Brazil's history, as you correctly
mention, is closely linked with the Portuguese; Brazil is a far more
European country than Taiwan. But, will this skew the amount of people
interested in attending? Hard to assert.

One thing to remember is that we try to find the best place for
*Debian*, not for each of us as individuals. Not necessarily the best
tourist destination. We try to evaluate where the project will
"profit" most in having a conference in, if you allow such a
comparison. We have explicitly decided *not* to judge based on how
tourist-interesting a place is, but on the factors important for our
work. Of course, we have always had the luck of having great teams
from interesting places all over the world bidding for DebConf ;-)

I was going to answer on your impresssions about Brazil, but it's a
bit pointless. Think of it - I guess we even chatted about this in
South Africa. Brazil and India are both very huge countries (Brazil
has slightly over twice India's surface). They are both countries with
great contrasts and many very different regions. I guess a
North-Eastern Brazilian from the deserts will not believe his home
town to be a jungle, just as you won't believe your home town to be
cold and among the highest mountains in the world ;-)

Actually, we get to decide way before DC17 - By March, we should have
a clear picture :)

(hopefully we won't get to the shoot-out phase!)
